How Often Should You Change Your Engine Oil in Nigeria?

Engine oil is the cheapest thing you will ever replace on your car, and the most expensive thing to ignore. In Nigeria the textbook answer — "every 10,000 km" — is written for cool motorways in Europe, not for 34°C heat, red dust and hours of stop-start traffic in Lagos or Abuja.
What actually breaks the oil down
Oil degrades in three ways, and Nigerian conditions speed up all three:
- Heat — sustained high temperatures oxidise the oil and thin it out.
- Dust — dusty air clogs the filter faster, so grit starts circulating.
- Short trips — the engine never reaches full temperature, so water and fuel stay trapped in the oil.
An engine that only does 15-minute school runs ages its oil about twice as fast as one doing steady highway mileage.
A practical schedule
| Driving pattern | Oil change interval | Filter |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly highway, long trips | 7,500 km or 6 months | Every change |
| Mixed town and highway | 5,000 km or 6 months | Every change |
| Mostly short city trips, heavy traffic | 4,000 km or 4 months | Every change |
| Diesel, dusty roads or commercial use | 4,000 km or 3 months | Every change |
Whichever row you land on, time matters as much as distance. Oil left sitting in an engine collects condensation. If you have barely driven this year, you still need a change.
Write the date and odometer reading on a sticker and put it inside your door jamb. Your next change becomes impossible to forget.
The three checks you can do yourself
- Pull the dipstick on a cold engine. Oil should be amber, not black and gritty.
- Rub a drop between two fingers. Grit means change it now.
- Check the level weekly. If you are losing oil between changes, book a mechanic — that is a leak or worn rings, not an oil quality problem.
When to stop guessing
If the oil light flickers at idle, the engine rattles on start-up, or the oil smells of fuel, stop driving and get it checked. Those are symptoms a filter change will not fix.
Book an oil service from your dashboard in the Carbud app and a technician will be dispatched to your location. Oil change takes less than 30 minutes and saves you millions of naira replacing a damaged engine.
Your car. Handled.
