Vehicle Papers in Nigeria: What Each Document Costs and When It Expires
Every Nigerian driver carries the same four papers, and almost nobody can recite what each one actually covers. This is the short version.
The four documents

Driving with an expired vehicle licence or roadworthiness certificate is an offence, and some states detain the vehicle until the papers are sorted. Do not wait until a checkpoint to find out.
What happens if you are late
Late renewal is not simply a fine. The process changes: you may need a fresh inspection instead of an automatic renewal, which takes longer and costs more in transport alone.
Most states let you renew up to 30 days before expiry with no penalty. Renewing early is the single cheapest decision in this whole list.
Private or commercial?
The rate for a commercial vehicle is higher than for a private car, and the roadworthiness check is stricter. If you use your car for deliveries or ride-hailing, declare it.
- Private car: standard annual rate
